Harry Potter has taken the world by storm. A series of novels that turned into movies and merchandise was conceived in the mind of J.K. Rowling. Like any successful fiction novel, writing the books took courage, imagination, and above all a dedication to see the completed works published. It took hard work, long hours, and great sacrifice.
So what makes the Harry Potter author different than other successful fiction authors? It’s the fact that she began the journey into the world of Harry Potter while she was a single mom living on government aid.
J.K. Rowling’s is a story that every Strong Single Mom should find inspiring. After all, we all have dreams and hopes and desires that live deep inside of us.
Too often we lose sight of those dreams, thinking that we have to stuff them away during our single mom journey. But J.K. Rowling helps us to see that we CAN indeed find fulfillment of our dreams.
The main thing to remember is that getting those dreams fulfilled will indeed take sacrifice. We can find state assistance and/or the support of family and friends when we are down. We can search for and obtain good – even fantastic – jobs that give us the ability to maintain or even exceed our financial needs. But the realization of our dreams? That is up to us!
After reading an article about J.K. Rowling on Wetpaint.com, I was reminded of a few basics to achieving success as a single mom where our dreams and goals are concerned:
- Create a plan – and write it down. It’s not enough to simply know in our hearts, minds, and spirits what we wish to achieve. As long as we keep them locked up inside of us as a big picture idea, those dreams will continue to simply stay locked away as wishful thinking. Having a written plan acts like a road map so you always keep in mind where you have been, where you are, and where you are going.
- Take action. Even if it’s just little baby steps every day, take action daily. This is key. J.K Rowling kept writing and creating no matter what. And look how well that worked out for her! Your dream can become a reality, but there’s no “dream-granting fairy” waiting to wave her wand and make that happen. It’s little actions daily and consistency that will help you accomplish things.
- Do it anyway! There’s a million little things that can and WILL happen on your journey to turning your dream into reality. You’ll get too busy, you’ll get too broke, you’ll get too afraid. Whatever obstacle you can imagine has the potential to take you off track and keep your dream as just that…a dream. If you REALLY want to turn that dream into a reality, don’t let those obstacles become excuses. Do those actions ANYWAY!
- See it through to completion. Can you imagine if J.K. Rowling would have gotten halfway through that first manuscript and then stopped. What if she had writer’s block? Maybe she didn’t think a certain scene made sense so she shelved the project? What if she would have stopped writing once she landed the job at a church in Scotland? When you think of the empire that has been created because she was dedicated to seeing her story complete and published, it seems unthinkable that she may have quit. But I’m willing to bet she faced moments where it would have been easier to just throw in the towel. But she didn’t. And neither should you!
So in the words of the guy in Pretty Woman, “What’s YOUR dream?” Write it down, take action, and stick to it. And when you feel like quitting, think of J.K. Rowling and be inspired! If she can bring her dream into reality as a single mom, so can you.
