  • J.K. Rowling, Author of Harry Potter Series, and Her Days as a Single Mom

jk-rowling-official-portraitHarry Potter has taken the world by storm.  A series of novels that turned into movies and merchandise was conceived in the mind of J.K. Rowling.  Like any successful fiction novel, writing the books took courage, imagination, and above all a dedication to see the completed works published.  It took hard work, long hours, and great sacrifice.

So what makes the Harry Potter author different than other successful fiction authors?  It’s the fact that she began the journey into the world of Harry Potter while she was a single mom living on government aid.

J.K. Rowling’s is a story that every Strong Single Mom should find inspiring.  After all, we all have dreams and hopes and desires that live deep inside of us. (more…)

  • How Does the Child of a Strong Single Mom Spell “Father?”

For every Strong Single Mom who has to play the roles of both Mother AND Father, this video is a truly beautiful tribute to you!

Spelling Father from stillmotion on Vimeo.

Isn’t this what it’s all about?  Raising our children the best we can, going above and beyond what we ever thought possible of ourselves, all to give our kids the opportunity to live their dreams?  Thank you to poet Marshall Davis Jones for this fabulous work of visual and spoken art.  As Strong Single Moms, we need every “Thank you” that we can get.  And it helps to hear it from the adult child of a Single Mother.  It gives us light in our hearts and hope for the future that some day our own children will realize what we sacrificed for them – and it helps to inspire us to keep going when days are tough.

  • The New Year’s Resolutions of a Strong Single Mom
By on January 1, 2013 | No Comments Comments

The last year is behind us.  I don’t know about you, but there were DEFINITELY times when I gave my strength away.

There were times that I chose to be bitter about something (usually aimed at my kids’ dad…I’m not gonna lie!)  There were times that I let my mind settle on revenge or mean-spirited thoughts.  There were times that I forgot to focus on how grateful I am for my blessings and instead focused on what wasn’t “going right.”  I tried to do things on my own instead of seeking out help.  I forgot to accept my shortcomings and demanded perfection of myself.  I got bogged down in the day-to-day monotony of life, and didn’t stay focused on the bigger picture….my WHY.  And I KNOW there were times that I didn’t take the actions I KNEW I needed to.

With that in mind, I decided to write out Seven New Year’s Resolutions for the Strong Single Mom.  These are resolutions that will help keep us FOCUSED and STRONG in 2013! (more…)

  • Life Lesson from a Cocktail Waitress

Life-Lessons-for-the-strong-single-momIt’s funny.  You never really know when you’re in the middle of a life-altering moment.  It’s not until you look back and see the situation from a distance that you understand the true magnitude of that moment.

I had one of those moments when I was a 19 year old cocktail waitress at a sports bar.  Who knew?

It was a Sunday night during football season.  The bar I worked at in Northeast Phoenix was huge, but not usually full.  So I was the only waitress on that night.  The only other people working were the bartender and a brand new cook.  A cook who had never actually been a cook anywhere else, I might add.

One of the owners was also present.  Of course, by present I mean he was sitting in his usual seat at the bar enjoying the endless supply of beer that his partnership provided.

That’s when all hell broke loose. (more…)

You open your eyes, look at the clock, and realize it is time to roll out of bed.  What is the first thought through your mind?  Are you excited to face another day, or are you wishing you could roll over and go back to sleep.  If the day ahead seems daunting, it’s time for a shift.

Shift your thoughts, shift your life.

As single moms, the daily actions that we face can seem overwhelming sometimes. (more…)

  • Choose to Be The Change! Inspired by “Real Dads Don’t Leave”
By on May 13, 2011 | No Comments Comments

I recently read a post on Dan Pearce’s Single Dad Laughing blog. Part of being able to provide all the best to our Strong Single Moms is knowing what a GOOD Single Dad’s view point is, and this is just one of the many resources I use to do just that.

So when I read Dan’s blog post called Real Dads Don’t Leave, I was pretty intrigued. Mainly because this seems to be a hot topic among our Strong Single Moms lately.   (more…)
